The jump is so frightening between
where I am and where I could be . . . because of all I may become, I will close
my eyes and leap! -
Mary Anne Radmacher
Getting Started
We are more
than midway into April, which means a third of the year is almost over. I know many of us made resolutions at the
beginning of the year. This is good
because it shows that some effort was made to plan. However, we make plans, but how often do we
go beyond doing just that? Do we take
the first step toward our goal? Do we
become overwhelmed just thinking about the magnitude of the task? I must admit, I have been guilty of
procrastination. It seems like the
hardest part sometimes is getting started.
When I
consider dreaded assignments, I have found that getting started is half the
battle. Afterwards, I usually find a
rhythm to keep going and to finish. It
causes me to wonder, how many opportunities do we miss because we don't take
the first step, jump the first hurdle or go through the first door that leads
to our destiny? To put it in simple
terms, to go to work, school or church, we must go through several doors to get
where we are going. We start out by walking
out of the door to our place of residence.
Afterwards, we probably enter the door of our mode of transportation,
and ultimately the door of our destination.
If we never take the first step, we forfeit the door of opportunity.
Recently, I
attended a women's conference where one of the speakers gave an insightful thought. She shared with the audience several words
she uses to define her life. One of
those words was "begin," and she pointed
out how she liked the third definition in Webster's Dictionary:
begin: 3. to do or succeed in the least degree.
Every attempt
made in the right the direction is a success.
Walking one block is succeeding in the least degree to starting an
exercise regiment. Passing that first
exam is succeeding in the least degree to earning a diploma. Skipping dessert is succeeding in the least
degree to shedding those extra pounds. Getting
a journal and penning the first page is succeeding in the least degree to
writing a book (This, I know). With that
said, I will never look at getting started the same.
I pray you
have the courage to take the first step.
Speaking the
truth in love,
